How it all started…

THE STORY OF LITTLE FOOT FOODS STARTS ALL THE WAY BACK IN 1929 WITH THE BIRTH OF JOAN DYCHA (THEN DABROWSKI) IN POLAND. IN 1938, ALONG WITH HER MOTHER AND SISTER, JOAN, IMMIGRATED TO CANADA TO REJOIN HER FATHER, WHO HAD GONE OVER AHEAD OF THEM YEARS PRIOR. GROWING UP IN WINDSOR, JOAN AND HER SISTER SPENT A LOT OF TIME HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS IN THE POLISH COMMUNITY. JOAN WAS KNOWN FOR HER BEAUTY AND WON A FEW BEAUTY CONTESTS IN THE POLISH COMMUNITY AS A TEENAGER! CHECK OUT HER GLAMOUR SHOT! JOAN MARRIED AT 21 AND A FEW YEARS LATER SHE WAS THE MOTHER TO TWO CHILDREN (VICTORIA & RALPH (OUR CO-OWNER RACHAEL’S DAD— DO YOU SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING?). JOAN ALWAYS LOVED TO COOK AND WOULD MAKE EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCH! SHE QUESTIONED WHY ANYONE WOULD GET TAKEOUT FOOD WHEN SHE COULD MAKE THE MEAL HERSELF! SHE WAS KNOWN AMONGST FRIENDS AND FAMILY, AS AN EXCELLENT CHEF, OFTEN UTILIZING A WEALTH OF FAMILY RECIPES, WHICH INCLUDED PIEROGI, CABBAGE ROLLS AND BORSCHT.

TRADITION MEETS

INNOVATION!

FAST FORWARD TO 2013, WHEN RACHAEL MYERS, GRANDDAUGHTER OF JOAN, GOT THE IDEA TO START MAKING HER GRANDMOTHER’S TRADITIONAL POTATO AND ONION PIEROGI TO SELL AT WINDSORS BURGEONING DOWNTOWN FARMERS MARKET. RACHEL GREW UP MAKING PIEROGI, AND AT THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS DECIDED TO TAKE THE LEAP INTO PRODUCING THEM ALONGSIDE HER PARTNER ROBERT. THE PIEROGI WERE AN INSTANT HIT! PEOPLE LOVED THE ULTRA-THIN DOUGH AND THE FILLING TOO BUT RACHAEL AND ROBERT THOUGHT TO THEMSELVES… WHY STOP THERE? WHY NOT COMBINE THE TRADITIONAL DULL WITH SOME NEW AND UNIQUE FLAVOR PROFILES? THIS IS THE MOMENT THAT LITTLE FOOT FOODS WAS TRULY BORN. WITH THE SKILLS TO PAY THE BILLS AND AN ETHOS DRIVEN TOWARDS LOCALLY PRODUCED FOODS AND SUSTAINABILITY, LITTLE FOOT FOODS WAS OFF TO THE RACES!

NOT SO LITTLE ANYMORE…

IT WASN’T TOO LONG AFTER THAT WE MOVED TO OUR FIRST FACILITY AT TECUMSEH ROAD EAST IN WINDSOR. A PHYSICAL LOCATION GAVE US THE ABILITY TO FURTHER COLLABORATE WITH OUR COMMUNITY OF LOCAL PARTNERS BY STARTING TO RETAIL FANTASTIC PRODUCTS MADE HERE IN THE COUNTY. THE FACILITY ALSO ALLOWED US TO EXPAND OUR OPERATIONS, WE PURCHASED OUR FIRST PIEROGI MAKING MACHINE AND STOPPED FOLDING EACH INDIVIDUAL PIEROGI BY HAND (DON’T WORRY THOUGH, OUR PIROGI ARE STILL EACH INDIVIDUALLY INSPECTED!). AS DEMAND CONTINUED TO GROW, WE BEGAN RETAILING OUR PRODUCT AT GROCERS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. OVER OUR TIME AT OUR FIRST FACILITY, WE CREATED OVER 100 FLAVOURS OF PIEROGI, OFTEN TIMES COLLABORATING WITH LOCAL RESTAURANTS AND FOOD PRODUCERS. WE LOVED THE SPACE AND EVEN HAD A MASSIVE MURAL PAINTED ON IT BUT, ALAS, WE STARTED TO OUTGROW THE SPACE.

HERE & NOW!

IN 2021 WE STARTED TO MAKE THE PLANS TO SHIFT INTO A LARGER FACILITY TO KEEP UP WITH DEMAND, AND TO EXPAND OUR PRODUCTION TO A LEVEL WHERE WE COULD SERVICE MORE THAN JUST THE WINDSOR ESSEX COUNTY. NOT LONG AFTER, WE FOUND OUR NEW HOME AT 2010 FASAN DR. IN OLDCASTLE ONTARIO. IT WASN’T TOO FAR A DRIVE FROM OUR OLD RETAIL LOCATION AND IT’S MORE CENTRALIZED LOCATION AND GREATER AMOUNT OF SPACE ALLOWED FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BETTER SERVICE OUR CLIENTS AND CUSTOMERS. BETTER KNOWN AS PIEROGI HQ, OUR PRIMARY RETAIL HUB FOR OUR NOW 50 FLAVOURS OF PIROGI (35 OF WHICH ARE AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH US) ALONG WITH A HOST OF FANTASTIC LOCALLY PRODUCED PRODUCTS. WE ARE ALSO THE HOME OF ROBBY’S GOURMET SAUSAGES, AND THE ONLY PLACE TO GET HIS GREAT ITEMS OUTSIDE OF HIS POPUPS! WITH A DECADE OF BUSINESS UNDER OUR BELTS, WE COULDN’T BE MORE EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE WITH PLANS TO EXPAND OUR DISTRIBUTION THROUGHOUT ONTARIO, AND TO CONTINUE CREATING NEW AND UNIQUE PIEROGI FOR THE MASSES!
